Batidos

A little street scene in Panama City, Panama. Would love to know what these women were talking about.

Mr. Blue

There's nothing like a value painting to create mood. In this case Ultramarine blue and White.

What flavor?

While I was growing up in Panama I would buy snowcones or "Raspados" from these vendors who would wander around the city ringing little bells as they approached. I was always excited to hear this. At the time they were $.25, now they're a dollar. Man I hate inflation.

Double Basses!

Another in a series of orchestra paintings using a limited palette -  White, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, and Ultramarine blue. I really enjoy these orchestra paintings, it's all about value, very little color. I gave myself 90 minutes to do this  - I cheated a little bit, but not much. Pretty happy with it. I painted this with Golden Open acrylics on Masonite.

Hold for a Rest

8.5" X 9.5" Painted with a limited palette of White, Yellow Ochre, Alizarin Crimson, and Ultramarine Blue. These are fun little value exercises.

Eighth and 45th

I stayed in New York City a few years ago and this was the view from an apartment we rented. A really interesting pattern of lights and darks and a variety of shapes. I removed  a lot of the detail to concentrate on the simpler larger patterns.

Can't Decide

8" X 8". An outdoor vendor by the New York public library. I took the shot around 10 o'clock at night while these people were waiting in line. The guy looking up at the menu seemed mighty confused. Maybe dining at this hour? I think four out of five doctors recommend not eating this late.

Too Many Notes

8" X 10". I painted this piece four times before I was happy with it. I have no idea why it was so tough. I wrestled with how much color to add to the figure and finally figured out that better to leave her as a simple dark value and give all the color to the fruit. I have no idea why it took me so long to get there...

A Colorful Personality

9" X 12". I did this little piece from a shot I took at Gorgona Beach in Panama a few years ago. I loved how pompous this guy looked.
