Acrylic Studies

Four small studies done on plywood using Golden Open acrylic paints. I've been trying this paint as an option painting on location instead of water mixable oil's. This is a brand of acrylic paints which dry a little slower than normal acrylics (acting more like oil paints) but still dry pretty quickly so by the end of a painting session you can cart them off in your car and not leave paint stains on every vehicle you own. A nice feature after having to wash a lot of car seats and rugs.

Cheap Gas

8" X 10" A little night study. I always like doing these night scenes because they are more about value or the lights and darks in a painting. I find  my eye always goes to the point of highest contrast, not necessarily the richest paint color.

La Cuna Sonria

11" X 14" I painted this piece after being inspired by some videos by Steve Huston on painting the head. I was lucky to have taken classes with him at Disney and he was the best teacher I ever had, organized, clear, and always painted examples of what he was describing to illustrate his point. I pretty much teach everything I learned from him.

Andres

A little painting of the classical guitarist Andres Segovia. I was really happy with how this came out. Maybe because I play classical guitar and used to listen to him for hours. He really was amazing.
I did this with a very limited palette of white, yellow ochre, red cad light, alizarin Crimson, and black. I tried to keep the edges looser to suggest some the movement.

Leaving Port

6" X 9". Painted on Masonite as a study for a larger painting. I like working on these smoother masonite surfaces particularly when I'm working with water mixable oil paints which tend to be a little pastier than regular oils. 

I added the birds to give it interest and balance out the painting. I added Phthalo blue to my palette and used it in the foreground and in the hull. It's a strong color and you have to be real careful with it. It'll dominate other colors but for getting certain blue/greens it's perfect.

Walt

A small study of Walt Disney. 9 x 12 on masonite. I repainted this three times. Getting the likeness was tough enough much less trying to figure out all the color temperature choices. One step at a time.

Bruce's Pooches

9 x 12.  It doesn't happen very often but this is one of those paintings that fell into place fairly quickly. By some miracle or otherworldly act I was able to lay this down with a minimum of fuss and didn't have to go back in and redo sections of it. It doesn't happen very often and when it does I generally throw a party.
